Just yesterday I spoke to a new client on the phone. Toward the end of the call, I asked how she got my name. This is a typical question because I always want to track where the referrals come from and thank the referral source.
The new client laughed and said words that sort of stunned me:
"Because you are famous. I've read your column in the paper and listened to you on the radio for years."

This is important because I live in a town over run with therapists and counselors. In fact, the joke in Tallahassee is that you are either a therapist or in therapy or both.
Because of articles, I'm known as "the guy in the paper." When people read my articles in the paper, they call me when they need a counselor.
Because of articles, I get 5 minutes of free advertising on the radio each week. That would cost hundreds of dollars a month if I were to pay for it. I radio interview is basically just an audio version of an article.
Because of articles, I get a steady stream of new clients in my face to face private practice. And that is just in the local area.
Now, I do not tell you these things to impress you. I tell you these things to impress upon the power and benefit of writing articles in your area of expertise.
All the benefits mentioned above are because of articles.
