One of the most enjoyable things I get to do in my professional day is working with our members at BuildingYourIdealPractice.com. One of the things we teach our private practice professionals on our teleseminars is how to craft an effective laser speech.
So what's a laser speech?
When someone asks you what you do, what do you say?
I used to say "I'm a marriage and family therapist." This would typically get one of three reactions:
1. People would walk away, as if this was a scary thing.
2. "Oh, so are you analyzing me?" Not until right now.
3. They would begin to tell me all their problems.
Learning about laser speeches changed all that. Here's how to craft a laser speech:
"Do you know how (fill in the blank with one of the problems faced by those with whom you work)? Well, what I do is (fill in the blank with one or more solutions you uniquely provide.")
Applied to my situation, "I'm a marriage and family therapist" became "Do you know how so often couples that were once close will slowly
drift apart? Well, what I do is help couples rekindle the spark, get close again and stay close."
The laser speech applied to the article summary
We've all read (and probably written) our share of put you to sleep article summaries.
For example, "This article gives you five ways to easily write an article." ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.
As opposed to "Do you know how sometimes it can be tough to push out another article What this article does is give you a simple 5 step formula to write compelling articles over and over again."
