Next time you are at the circus, check out the elephants.
These are huge animals. I know this because I rode one last year with my oldest son. Have you ever been in the middle of a situation that seemed like a good idea at the time and then in the middle of it you realizw what you are doing and wonder what in the world were you thinking?
When circus elephants are not performing, sometimes they are tethered to a stake in the ground that is attached to one leg. Do you know why one tether can hold such a huge animal?
Because the elephant thinks it can. You see, from birth on, baby elephants are tethered to a stake in the ground. A baby elephant cannot pull out the stake. An adult elephant can, it's just been conditioned to believe that it cannot.
Sound familiar.
Everyday I talk with professionals who believe they cannot write articles. It's such a kick to hear it in their voice and/or see it on their face when they "get it" that they can and just did.
A recent example
On a recent call on practice building with members of Building Your Ideal Practice with got into a discussion about procrastination about writing.
To show our members that ideas are everywhere and that they could do this, after the call I wrote an article about "The Magic of Momentum: How to Beat the Procrastination Monster at Its Own Game." The idea came from something said on the call and a few strategies we discussed for beating procrastination.
It's a good example of a 4 step article writing formula:
Step - Get an Idea
Ideas are everywhere. All you have to do is notice them.
Step 2 - Create a Skeleton
Come up with 5 or 6 points, including signs of the problem and solutions for the problem.
Step 3 - Put Some Meat on the Bones
Elaborate on each of the points by adding 2 - 3 sentences about each point.
Step 4 - Dress It Up
Clean up and edit what you have written.
